Halloween took an unexpected turn for Sparky, an 8-year-old border collie, as he found himself trapped in the chilling waters of Baisley Pond in South Jamaica, Queens.

Someone’s distress call reached the NYPD, and officers Branden Williams and Marc Esposito, from the 113th precinct, answered the plea for help.

They initially waited for additional assistance, but the officers, driven by the urgency of Sparky’s cries, decided to take matters into their own hands. They couldn’t bear to stand idly by as the blind dog’s desperate sounds echoed around them.

“It was honestly really sad to hear. We called our Emergency Service Unit. They said they were coming, but just by listening to the dog, we knew we had to do something,” Esposito said.

William added, “We couldn’t see him, but we could hear him crying out, so once we heard that, we knew we had to do something; we had to jump in there.”

Rescuing Sparky was no easy feat for Officers Williams and Esposito.

“It was shallow, but it was so uneven, so you’d take a step and then another step, and that next step you just sank all the way down until you’re chest high and neck high, so it was a bit of a struggle to get to the dog,” said Esposito.

In the dramatic bodycam footage shared on Twitter, viewers could witness the officers navigating the treacherous conditions to reach the stranded dog.

When they finally reached Sparky, the realization of his blindness added a layer of complexity to the rescue. Despite his impaired vision, Sparky proved to be a good-natured and friendly dog.

The officers wasted no time and brought the shivering dog to safety. He was examined and treated for hypothermia by vets at the precinct.

Sparky’s owners, who had reported him missing the day before, were relieved to be reunited with their beloved pet. Now, he is recovering at home.

The heroic actions of Officers Williams and Esposito underscore the compassionate side of law enforcement, showcasing the lengths they are willing to go to help those in need, even if they have four legs.

“In the moment you think, if this was my dog, I wish somebody would help,” Officer Esposito said. “It’s a really good feeling knowing that we saved the dog and it got reunited with its family.”

“Definitely proud of what we did, and definitely would do it again,” Williams added.
